'Robyn Hromek's Game Time:  Games to Promote Social and Emotional Resilience for Children aged 4 to 14' is available from Footprint Books www.footprint.com.au  Promoting emotional resilience. Thirteen therapeutic boardgames for children aged 4-14 covering issues like relationships, teasing, anger management, encouraging others, being strong and smart, anxiety, success at school, depression and happiness - Australian versions. Whole Child is now available from Rigby. This is a resource for lower, middle and upper primary students covering the topics of emotions, getting along, family and community, citizenship and human rights and health and wellbeing. The aim is to "achieve social and emotional wellbeing in your school." It comprises a poster pack, literature by authors such as Libby Gleeson, guided discussions and circle time activities.

These are some suppliers of very useful materials:

  • St Lukes Resources (www.innovativeresources.org) publish a variety of card packs, sticker sets and other materials
  • Inyahead press (www.inyahead.com.au) distribute and publish many Circle Time and other relevant books, including some Lucky Duck publications in Australia
  • Footprint Books distribute Sage publications who have recently bought Lucky Duck so further titles are also available from them.

Helen McGrath and Toni Noble (2003): The Bounce Back! series: a classroom resiliency program. Pearson Education Australia. Designed for students from kindergarten to year 8, it aims to develop a more positive supportive and pro-social school culture, and improved mental health for all students. The four volumes include a teacher's handbook, and three which each concentrate on an age group: Lower Primary, Middle Primary, Upper Primary/Junior Secondary.

Leanne Harsh has written some excellent children's books dealing with issues of loss and family breakdown. You can buy three separately or all together for $36.75. You can contact Leanne here


Circles of Friends is a peer support group intervention to promote the inclusion of children experiencing difficulties.

The National Coalition Against Bullying has a resource site at "Buddy Bear and the Better Buddies program", which teaches children to care about the other children around them.

WISE Research (wellbeing In Schools Evaluation Research) is a mental health evaluation service that has been developed for use in both primary and secondary schools. It is a whole-school program to assess the social and emotional wellbeing of ALL children and adolescents.  The program has been designed with an understanding of the limited resources and time pressures on schools to-day.  In addition to a full statistical analysis, staff and parents are provided with a clear, easy-to-read report exploring wellbeing and mental health within their school. Separate evaluations of teaching staff are also available.
